Pick of the Week

Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Huston are at their fierce finest in master Hollywood craftsman Anthony Mann's crackling western melodrama The Furies. In 1870s New Mexico Territory, megalomaniacal widowed ranch owner T. C. Jeffords (Huston, in his final role) butts heads with his daughter, Vance (Stanwyck), a firebrand with serious daddy issues, over her dowry, choice of husband, and, finally, ownership of the land itself. Both sophisticated in its view of frontier settlement and ablaze with searing domestic drama, The Furies is a hidden treasure of American filmmaking, boasting Oscar–nominated cinematography and vivid supporting turns from Judith Anderson, Wendell Corey, and Gilbert Roland.

It's straightforward and easy to use: just type in the name of a musical artist you like, click on the artist's circle when it comes up, and hit expand, and a cluster of similar artists will appear. Each artist that pops up is then linked to another five or six artists to discover. In the case of some artists, you can even find added information such as a small bio or a link to their website. And sure, you can search for the latest pop sensation, but if you want to search for classical composers similar to Claude Debussy, you can do that too. The graphics are simple and sleek and the site is easy to manipulate. Just be careful: you may find it addictive!

Jack Fish: A Novel

by J. Milligan

Somewhere off Coney Island, paddling through seaweed and Styrofoam, is secret agent "Jack Fish." As an operative of the Elders of Atlantis, he is to find their enemy and spear him. Once he gets the hang of breathing on the surface, he can take up his mission. Staggering out of the water, he begins his odyssey into the strange city of New York. He's concerned about adjusting, but if he can make it here, he can make it anywhere. At first worried about being noticed, he discovers the Topworld is teeming with neighborhoods that are like reefs, filled with air breathers who seem as alien as he feels. ("You're from Atlanta?"). Jack Fish is just another dude from out of town, hanging out at the Mermaid Diner, scratching the webbing between his toes. Headlong and wildly entertaining, Jack Fish does for Atlanteans what Anonymous Rex did for dinosaurs.

Have you ever looked at Pablo Picasso's more abstract work and thought to yourself, "Hey, I could do that"? Well now you have your chance: Mr. Picassohead is a fun online application that lets you create Picasso-style portraits. Just drag and drop the features onto the canvas, and use the tools at the bottom to make the marks on the canvas shrink or grow, rotate or change color. See if you can make a picture of yourself! When you are done, you can save your work to the website's gallery, and even forward the painting to an email address. You can also browse the gallery to see what kind of pictures other people have come up with. Mr. Picassohead is perfect for people who might consider playing with a potato too frivolous.

Name That Movie

Think you know a lot about movies? When you think of your favorite movies, what is it that stands out for you? For artist Paul Rogers, it all comes down to the details; his drawings of films illustrate how those details might signify more for one viewer than they do another. On his blog, Rogers boils down each movie to six isolated images, often details peripheral to the action itself, and invites the reader to identify the movie. The images are delightfully retro line drawings in a style reminiscent of Ben Shahn, images that would not be out of place as magazine illustrations from the 1950s. Are you able to figure out which set of illustrations depicts Pulp Fiction? What about Vertigo? Some Like It Hot? It's harder than you might think!

Dogs That Changed The World

Man's best friend is the subject of this in-depth television program narrated by actor F. Murray Abraham. Learn how dogs have transformed from fierce, untamable beasts centuries ago to become the preferred pet for more than 750 million people worldwide. In addition to exploring where dogs came from, this informative program looks at where modern technology will be taking dogs in the future. The first program explores domestication of the dog, while the second program looks at the many different breeds of dogs and their roles. 'How to Love Your Dog' is a fun and interactive website for kids who love dogs. The site was designed and developed by Janet Wall, a teacher for 23 years. The focus is on kindness, commitment, respect, and responsible dog care.

The benefit of children learning about dogs goes beyond the care and training of our canine friends. Lessons on respect, responsibility, love, and compassion toward animals transfer to all areas of a child's life. Kids who learn and practice being kind, gentle, and generous with dogs naturally extend those feelings to people as well.

The Star Machine

Jeanine Basinger gives us an immensely entertaining look into the "star machine," examining how, at the height of the studio system, from the 1930s to the 1950s, the studios worked to manufacture star actors and actresses. With revelatory insights and delightful asides, she shows us how the machine worked when it worked, how it failed when it didn't, and how irrelevant it could sometimes be. She gives us the "human factor," case studies focusing on big stars groomed into the system: the "awesomely beautiful" (and disillusioned) Tyrone Power; the seductive, disobedient Lana Turner; and a dazzling cast of others -- Loretta Young, Errol Flynn, Irene Dunne, Deanna Durbin. She anatomizes their careers, showing how their fame happened, and what happened to them as a result. (Both Lana Turner and Errol Flynn, for instance, were involved in notorious court cases.) In her trenchantly observed conclusion, she explains what has become of the star machine and why the studios' practice of "making" stars is no longer relevant.

Word Spy

Paul McFedries is the author of more than 40 books on language; he believes that new words, or neologisms, are one of the best ways to understand a changing world and culture. He collects examples of these neologisms and posts them on his blog Word Spy. For each word, he provides notes on pronunciation, definition, as well as examples of their use. Examples of such neologisms include 'robocall' ("n. An automated phone call that plays a recorded message") and 'vegangelical' ("n. An extremely zealous vegan who is eager to make other people believe in and convert to veganism"). Word Spy is an exciting and informative travelogue through the evolving landscape of our language and, consequently, the cultures and subcultures that continually mold and shape not just the language but all of us who speak it.

Monster: A Novel

Meet Monster. Meet Judy. Two humans who don't like each other much, but together must fight dragons, fire-breathing felines, trolls, Inuit walrus dogs, and a crazy cat lady - for the future of the universe. Monster runs a pest control agency. He's overworked and has domestic troubles - like having the girlfriend from hell. Judy works the night shift at the local Food Plus Mart. Not the most glamorous life, but Judy is happy. No one bothers her and if she has to spell things out for the night-manager every now and again, so be it. But when Judy finds a Yeti in the freezer aisle eating all the Rocky Road, her life collides with Monster's in a rather alarming fashion. Because Monster doesn't catch raccoons; he catches the things that go bump in the night. Things like ogres, trolls, and dragons. Oh, and his girlfriend from Hell? She actually is from Hell.

Laugh-Out-Loud Cats

Adam "Apelad" Koford's Laugh-Out-Loud Cats is a charming webcomic: it presents a mash-up of LOLcats -- images that combine a photograph of a cat with a humorous caption in (often broken) English -- with the stylings of early 20th-century American comics, such as Walt Kelly's Pogo and George Herriman's Krazy Kat. These single-panel comic strips are drawn on "vintage" off-white paper and feature the ongoing exploits of one Meowlin Q. Kitteh ("a sort of cat hobo-raconteur," says Koford) and his young hapless kitten friend, Pip. The strip has witty references that run the gamut from Marcel Proust to Marvel Comics, from H.P. Lovecraft to Charlie Brown, and everything in between.
