Women in History

March is Women's History Month and the library has a new, free online resource called Women in History. Gain a sense of the place and influence of women in the society of their day, and of the ways women conformed to or broke from their expected roles. Women in History features examples of women both famous and unsung, along with a variety of primary source quotations and photographs.

Pamunkey Regional Library is proud to announce that it is now carrying online language-learning software by Mango Languages. Mango Languages is a welcome addition to the library for those wanting to study a foreign language easily and at their own pace and for free.

This premier online software program is a unique way to learn a foreign language. It combines linguistic expertise from across the globe with the latest software technologies, providing an easy-to-use interactive learning tool. Mango allows patrons to learn at their convenience. It is available in each of Pamunkey Regional Library’s branches in Hanover, Goochland, King and Queen, and King William counties as well as remotely from anyplace that our patrons have online access. Mango also features a unique comprehensive teaching approach that actively engages audio and visual cues to assist users in language retention.

Mango Languages currently offers 12 language courses – Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, ESL for Polish speakers, ESL for Spanish speakers, and ESL for Brazilian Portuguese speakers – with many more on the way.

Book sale volunteers should call Betty Britton-Johnston (746-5036) or Mary Ann Ney (550-0513) Co-Chairmen of the sale.We will also talk about our next program on Saturday March 7, featuring Dr. Peter Wallenstein, Professor of History at VA Tech and author of, "Cradle of America: Four Centuries of Virginia History," a 2008 Library of Virginia finalist. Dr Wallenstein will speak about "Virginia and Its Role in National Politics." Our annual meeting will be Tuesday February 10, at 7:00 p.m. We will elect officers for 2009 and vote on a proposed bylaw change. Please join us and bring a friend! We need everyone's help!

Shortly before turning the big 5-0, boisterous party planner and Cooking with Gusto! personality Augusta "Gus" Simpson finds herself planning a birthday party she'd rather not - her own. She's getting tired of being the hostess, the mother hen, the woman who has to plan her own birthday party. What she needs is time on her own with enough distance to give her loved ones the ingredients to put together successful lives without her." "Assisted by a handsome up-and-coming chef, Oliver, Gus invites a select group to take an on-air cooking class. But instead of just preaching to the foodie masses, she will teach regular people how to make rich, sensuous meals - real people making real food. Gus decides to bring a vibrant cast of friends and family on the program: Sabrina, her fickle daughter; Troy, Sabrina's ex-husband; Anna, Gus's timid neighbor; and Carmen, Gus's pompous and beautiful competitor at the Cooking Channel. And when she begins to have more than collegial feelings for her sous-chef, Gus realizes that she might be able to rejuvenate not just her professional life, but her personal life as well.
