I Love You, Beth Cooper

by Larry Doyle

Recklessly announcing his love for the head cheerleader during his valedictorian commencement speech, Denis Cooverman is inducted into the wilder side of youth culture by the object of his affection, who turns out to be more than he bargained for.

Larry Doyle won the Thurber Prize for American Humor for this novel of teenage agnst. For more information on this award, check out the website of the Thurber House.

Website of the Week

Early in the last century, when questions about the health effects of smoking became a topic of widespread discussion, tobacco companies undertook a multi-faceted campaign to allay the public's fears. As terms like "smoker's cough" and "coffin nails" (referring to cigarettes) began to appear in the popular vernacular, tobacco marketers recognized the need to counter this threat to their livelihood. Our intention is to tell—principally through advertising images—the story of how, between the late 1920s and the early 1950s, tobacco companies used deceptive and often patently false claims in an effort to reassure the public of the safety of their products.

This is an exhibit created by the Stanford School of Medicine's Lane Library.

My Hero: Military Kids Write About

Their Moms and Dads

edited by Allen Appel and Mike Rothmiller

Adults will both laugh and cry while reading the more than 100 short paragraphs written by kids whose parents are serving in the military. There is a preface written by General H. Norman Schwarzkopf as well as comments from three former presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. While the contributors range in age from 6 to 13, this is really a book for adults, who will appreciate these children's deep feelings.

The Civil Rights Digital Library Initiative represents one of the most ambitious and comprehensive efforts to date to deliver educational content on the Civil Rights Movement via the Web. The struggle for racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s is among the most far-reaching social movements in the nation's history, and it represents a crucial step in the evolution of American democracy.CRDL is a partnership among librarians, technologists, archivists, educators, scholars, academic publishers, and public broadcasters. The initiative receives support through a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Mercedes Coffin

by Faye Kellerman

Billionaire genius Genoa Greeves never got over the shocking death of her favorite teacher, Bennett "Dr. Ben" Alston Little, murdered execution-style and stuffed into the trunk of his Mercedes-Benz. No arrests were ever made, no killer charged for the brutal crime. Fifteen years later, the high-tech CEO reads about another execution-style murder; this time the victim is a Hollywood music producer named Primo Ekerling. There is no obvious connection, but the case is eerily similar to Little's and Genoa feels the time is right to close Dr. Ben's case once and for all—offering the L.A.P.D. a substantial financial "incentive" if justice is finally served for Little.

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum's mission is to promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a gateway to America.

Today, although most citizens trace the beginnings of their American journeys to the urban rather than the rural environment and most descend from immigrants, The Tenement’s landmark tenement building at 97 Orchard Street is the first homestead of urban working class and poor immigrant people preserved and interpreted in the United States. Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, an immigrant portal for almost two centuries, 97 Orchard Street was home to an estimated 7,000 people from more than 20 nations between 1863 and 1935.

Website of the Week

This web site began in 1997 as "South America on the Matrix". Over the years new sections were added for Asia (1997), Africa (1998), the Middle East (2001) and North America (2001). Return trips to Africa in 2000 and 2002 and frequent shorter trips throughout North America resulted in many new photos being added to those sections. From March 2004 through May 2006, the author lived in Ukraine and thus the newest section of the web site, devoted to Eastern Europe, was born.
As of February 2008, there were 4,950 photos on the web site
