The Summer I Turned Pretty is the story of Isabel (Belly) Conklin. Every summer, she goes to Cousins beach along with her brother and mother to stay with the Fisher family. Susannah Fisher is the beloved best friend of Belly’s mom. Susannah has two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. These boys are everything to Belly. She met them when she was little and has stuck with them ever since. They are her brothers, her crushes, and her best friends. One summer though, everything changes. As the boys grow up, so does Belly. The line between friendship and something more becomes blurry as Belly navigates around all the joys and sadness that summer has to offer. It was a summer she would never forget.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is the perfect comfort read. The fast paced story keeps you engaged and the short chapters make it hard to put down. You quite literally become sucked into the story. Jenny Han’s writing style is also effortlessly beautiful. Her descriptions are so vivid, you feel as though you are right there on the beach with Belly. The characters in the book are not perfect; they are equal parts awkward and flawed. This makes them not only realistic, but relatable too. You simply cannot help but root for them as the story progresses. The Summer I Turned Pretty lets you slip away to summer whenever you’re feeling blue. I recommend this book to other fans of Jenny Han’s and all lovers of romance.
