Pick of the Week

Looking for something spooky to read this Halloween night? Then might we suggest the perennial classic
by Shirley Jackson
First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own. This edition also includes an introduction by author and director Guillermo del Toro.

Pick of the Week

Looking for something to read this weekend? Then might we suggest:
by Ed Hardy with Joel Slevin
“Ed Hardy” is emblazoned on everything from t-shirts and hats to perfumes and energy drinks. From LA to Japan, his colorful cross-and-bones designs and ribbon-banners have become internationally ubiquitous. But long before the fashion world discovered his iconic designs, the man behind the eponymous brand spearheaded nothing less than a cultural revolution. In this book, Ed Hardy recounts his genesis as a tattoo artist and leader in the movement to recognize tattooing as a valid and rich art form, through to the ultimate transformation of his career into a multi-billion dollar branding empire. Vividly packaged with original Ed Hardy artwork and ideal for ink devotees and Ed Hardy aficionados alike, Wear Your Dreams is a never-before-seen look at the tattoo artist who rocked the art world and has left a permanent mark on fashion history.

Pick of the Week

Looking for something to read this weekend? Then might we suggest:

by James Franco
The actors in James Franco’s brilliant debut novel include a McDonald’s drive-thru operator who spends his shift trying on accents; an ex-child star recalling a massive beachside bacchanal; hospital volunteers and Midwestern transplants; a vampire flick starlet who discovers a cryptic book written by a famous actor gone AWOL; and the ghost of River Phoenix. Then there’s Franco himself, who prowls backstage, peering out between the lines—before taking the stage with fascinating meditations on his art, along with nightmarish tales of excess. “Hollywood has always been a private club,” he writes. “I open the gates. I say welcome. I say, Look inside.” Told in a dizzying array of styles—from lyric essays and disarming testimonials to hilariously rambling text messages and ghostly footnotes—and loosely modeled on Alcoholics Anonymous’s Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Actors Anonymous is an intense, wild ride into the dark heart of celebrity.

And for more suggestions of novels written by eccentric actors, be sure to use our NoveList service!

Pick of the Week: Rocks across the Pond

Looking for something great to read this week?  Try Rocks across the Pond: Lessons learned, stories told by Richard and Kathy Verlander.  Richard and Kathy are the (very!) proud parents of Justin Verlander, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers.  The Tigers are ALCS bound once again, thanks in part to Justin’s skills on the mound.  In Rocks across the Pond, the Verlanders share their journey as baseball parents from Justin’s beginnings as a Little Leaguer to World Series champion.

Parents of any stripe will enjoy the Verlanders’ down to earth recollections, mixed with humor and life lessons on service to others, the importance of family, and providing children with a chance to play.  Baseball folks will appreciate a glimpse inside the system as the Verlanders navigate the early years of Justin’s career.  You won’t learn how to throw those gorgeous curveballs across the plate, but you’ll get a better sense of what it takes to shape not only a stellar athlete, but also a well-rounded and grounded human being.

Mark your calendars! Join Richard and Kathy Verlander at the Cochrane Rockville Branch Library on Tuesday November 12 from 7:00 - 8:45 p.m.  They will talk about Rocks across the Pond and be available to answer questions and sign copies of their book. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Rockville Library.
