Pick of the Week

Looking for something to read with your child this weekend to help them get more excited about math? Then might we suggest:

by Emily Gravett
How does 1 + 1 = 288? A family of rabbits soon supplies the answer in this extraordinary story. Hop along over to Fibonacci's Field and follow Lonely and Chalk Rabbit throughout a year as they try to cope with their rapidly expanding brood while handling a different seasonal challenge each month, from the cold of February to the wet of April and the heat of July. This interactive picture book--formatted like a calendar, including holes for hanging--slyly introduces the mathematical concept of exponential multiplication and is packed with gorgeous details and novelty elements, including a baby rabbit record book, a carrot recipe book, and a surprise pop-up ending.

And for suggestions for your next mathematical storytime, be sure to use our NoveList service!

Pick of the Week

Looking for something to read this weekend? Then might we suggest:

by John Homans
In What’s a Dog For?, Homans explores the dog’s complex and prominent place in our world and how it came to be. Evolving from wild animals to working animals to nearly human members of our social fabric, dogs are now the subject of serious scientific studies concerning pet ownership, evolutionary theory, and even cognitive science. From new insights into what makes dogs so appealing to humans to the health benefits associated with owning a dog, Homans investigates why the human-canine relationship has evolved so rapidly—how dogs moved into our families, our homes, and sometimes even our beds in the span of a generation, becoming a $53 billion industry in the United States in the process.
