Pick of the Week

Looking for something to start off the year on the spooky foot?
Might we suggest...

by Neil Gaiman

The end of the year usually brings with it best of lists and announcements for movies, books, and other diversions.  On Thursday, award-winning writer Neil Gaiman added another accolade to his collection.  His 2013 novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, was chosen as Book of the Year by British readers.  It’s an imaginative modern fable of survival about a man who returns to his childhood home for a funeral, evoking the memory, magic, fear, and danger of being a child. Try it one cold night this winter (keep at least one light on, too).

This title is also available as an eAudiobook.

by Maeve Binchy

Binchy’s last novel is a heartwarming and spirit-restoring swan song.  Stone House, a country inn set in western Ireland, is the background for these charming tales of love, loss, friendship, and community, populated with eccentric, yet endearing, characters who weave their way into your heart.  Perfect for cold nights with a hot cup of tea.

This title is also available in large print, on CD, as an eBook, and as a digital audiobook.

Pick of the Week

Looking for something off-beat to read this holiday season? Then might we suggest

by Brom
One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets earthward, a magical sack that will thrust the down-on-his luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus. Now Santa's time is running short, for the Yule Lord is determined to have his retribution and reclaim Yuletide. If Jesse can survive this ancient feud, he might have the chance to redeem himself to his family, to save his own broken dreams...and help bring the magic of Yule to the impoverished folk of Boone County.

Looking for something to read? Then might we suggest

by Sean Howe
Sure, you might have been thrilled watching The Avengers or The Amazing Spider-Man, but what's the story behind those famous characters? The creators behind the creations? Find out in Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe! Over the last half-century, these colorful characters have been passed along among generations of brilliant editors, artists, and writers who struggled with commercial mandates, a fickle audience, and, over matters of credit and control, one another. It's a history every bit as fascinating as the comics themselves!
