Pick of the Week

by Robert Vamosi
Technology is evolving faster than we are. As our mobile phones, mp3 players, cars, and digital cameras become more and more complex, we understand less and less about how they actually work and what personal details these gadgets might reveal about us. Robert Vamosi, an award-winning journalist and analyst who has been covering digital security issues for more than a decade, shows us the dark side of all that digital capability and convenience. Hotel-room TV remotes can be used to steal our account information and spy on what we've been watching, toll-booth transponders receive unencrypted EZ Pass or FasTrak info that can be stolen and cloned, and our cars monitor and store data about our driving habits that can be used in court against us. When Gadgets Betray Us gives us a glimpse into the secret lives of our gadgets and helps us to better understand--and manage--these very real risks.

Website of the Week

When cartoonist Caanan Grall wanted to try to do a 24 hour comic, he decided to do a mash-up of Thor and the Muppets. While he didn't quite finish it in time -- it takes a lot of work to finish a comic book that fast! -- when he did complete it, he posted the results on the internet for everyone to read. The resulting 24 pages are alternately hilarious, sweet, and surprisingly touching. And it is entirely worth it just to see Miss Piggy kicking Thor's keister. (Be sure to check out Caanan's comic strip while you're there, Max Overacts!)

Pick of the Week

by Emma Donoghue
To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work. Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

Website of the Week

Since 1957 the Quartermaster Museum has preserved the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, the Army's oldest logistic branch. From the Revolution to the Persian Gulf, America's secret weapon is the one that keeps soldiers supplied with food, water, clothing, fuel, shelter and other things they can't survive combat without. The Quartermaster Museum at Fort Lee maintains this website, which includes information about exhibits and collections, along with many historical photos.

Pick of the Week

by Jonathan Watts
When a Billion Chinese Jump is a road journey into the future of our species. Traveling from the mountains of Tibet to the deserts of Inner Mongolia via the Silk Road, tiger farms, cancer villages, weather-modifying bases, and eco-cities, Watts chronicles the environmental impact of economic growth with a series of gripping stories from the country on the front line of global development. He talks to nomads and philosophers, entrepreneurs and scientists, rural farmers and urban consumers, examining how individuals are trying to adapt to one of the most spectacular bursts of change in human history, then poses a question that will affect all of our lives: Can China find a new way forward or is this giant nation doomed to magnify the mistakes that have already taken humanity to the brink of disaster?

Website of the Week

Moneychimp seeks to be the most coherent, logical, useful and accessible financial education resource on the face of the earth. (According to them, they're about halfway there.) The site contains features that help explain investing and personal finance: calulators, articles, and a glossary help to shed some light on finances. The name comes from that old joke about the dart-throwing, stock-picking monkeys. A second reason for the name is that it carries a built-in disclaimer: the site is not claiming to be an authority on anything. They try hard to be accurate, but you should always double check whatever you see with additional sources.

Pick of the Week

by Taylor Clark
Nerves make us bomb job interviews, first dates, and SATs. With a presentation looming at work, fear robs us of sleep for days. It paralyzes seasoned concert musicians and freezes rookie cops in tight situations. And yet not everyone cracks. Soldiers keep their heads in combat; firemen rush into burning buildings; unflappable trauma doctors juggle patient after patient. It's not that these people feel no fear; often, in fact, they're riddled with it. In Nerve, Taylor Clark draws upon cutting-edge science and painstaking reporting to explore the very heart of panic and poise. Using a wide range of case studies, Clark overturns the popular myths about anxiety and fear to explain why some people thrive under pressure, while others falter-and how we can go forward with steadier nerves and increased confidence.

Website of the Week

The dramatic pace of technological change in the twentieth century obscures the surprising fact that most of the discoveries and inventions on which modern societies have been constructed were made in prehistoric times. Ancient inventions tell detailed stories of complex knowledge for which no written records exist. The Virtual Museum of Ancient Inventions is a project begun by the students in the course Ancient Inventions at Smith College, which was offered for the first time in the spring semester of 1997.
