Pick of the Week

by David Wondrich
A lively, historically informed, and definitive guide to classic American cocktails! Cocktail writer and historian David Wondrich presents the colorful, little-known history of classic American drinks-and the ultimate mixologist's guide-in this engaging homage to Jerry Thomas, father of the American bar. Wondrich reveals never-before-published details and stories about this larger-than-life nineteenth-century figure, along with definitive recipes for 100 punches, cocktails, sours, fizzes, toddies, slings, and other essential drinks, plus twenty new recipes from today's top mixologists, created exclusively for this book. This colorful and good-humored volume is a must read for anyone who appreciates the timeless appeal of a well-made drink-and the uniquely American history behind it.

Website of the Week

Kate Beaton started out with just a history degree, and has managed to put it to good use in her online comic Hark, A Vagrant. The comic takes as its source history and literature, and is generally updated a couple times a week. Whether she draws her inspiration from the book covers of Edward Gorey, the life of Nicola Tesla, or (a favorite strip of this author's) Bram Stoker's Dracula, the resulting comics tend to be smart, irreverent, and very funny.

Pick of the Week

by Helen Simonson
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart. The Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition? (Also available in large print and as a talking book.)

Pick of the Week

by Jennifer Ackerman
Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In Ah-Choo!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.

Pick of the Week

At the risk of being partisan, I have to say this writer is TEAM UNICORN. Zombies are gross.
Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier, eds.
It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan. This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?(Also available as a talking book.)

Website of the Week

This week's website is actually an online game: the goal of Cursor*10 is to move your cursor up to the 16th floor by clicking on the stairs. Sometimes the stairs might be hidden in boxes, or you may have to press down on a panel for them to appear. You only get a limited time per cursor, and then the next round you run the course right along with your previous cursors. In order to make it to the top floor, you essentially have to collaborate with yourself: only by having all your cursors work together will you be able to succeed. Fun and challenging, and maybe a little addictive!
