Pick of the Week

by Shirley Jackson
Get into the Halloween spirit early! First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

Website of the Week

Storynory is an online treasure trove of audio stories. They have published an audio story every week since 2005, and you will find a mixture of new stories, fairy tales, and specially adapted myths and histories. You will also find a sprinkling of poetry there. You can either download the stories as mp3s, or listen to them on the site. And the best part of all is that it's all free!

Pick of the Week

by Jay Stephens
With an off-beat sense of humor that makes learning fun, Jay Stephens shows kids how to draw a wide range of marvelous mechanical creatures complete with hardwired heads, bionic bodies, and lots of electrical extras. Budding cartoonists will be pleased to meet and illustrate such unique characters as Automa Tom, the cyborg Cyborella, Astralux, and Gokin 9. The design data Stephens wittily lays out include everything from wheels and transforming parts to jets, dials, levers, and weapon systems, all of which children can use to build their own creations. Kids get to decide whether their robots will have armor, be able to slide into small spaces, have the ability to shoot projectiles, or anything else their imaginations can dream up!

It covers such topics as the branches of government, national vs. state government, and citizenship. The content is divided by grade level into age-appropriate sections, with sections for parents and teachers too.

Pick of the Week

by Marie Phillips
Being a Greek god is not all it once was. Yes, the twelve gods of Olympus are alive and well in the twenty-first century, but they are crammed together in a London townhouse-and none too happy about it. And they've had to get day jobs: Artemis as a dog-walker, Apollo as a TV psychic, Aphrodite as a phone sex operator, Dionysus as a DJ. Even more disturbingly, their powers are waning, and even turning mortals into trees-a favorite pastime of Apollo's-is sapping their vital reserves of strength. Soon, what begins as a minor squabble between Aphrodite and Apollo escalates into an epic battle of wills. Two perplexed humans, Alice and Neil, who are caught in the crossfire, must fear not only for their own lives, but for the survival of humankind. Nothing less than a true act of heroism is needed-but can these two decidedly ordinary people replicate the feats of the mythical heroes and save the world? (Also available as a talking book.)

Website of the Week

Roasted Peanuts is a blog devoted to going through the entirety of Charles Schulz's run of the comic strip Peanuts, starting from the very first strip and progressing chronologically, linking to the most interesting strips. Each post provides commentary about the day's strip, pointing out the way that the strip evolved from what it started out as. This way you get to see, say, the secret origins of the Snoopy Dance. It's a nice way to get your recommended daily allowance of Peanuts! (Then again, you could always go the old fashioned route...)

by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams
A new era begins as Batwoman is unleashed on Gotham City! Marked by the blood-red bat emblem, Kate Kane is a soldier fighting her own private war - one that began years ago and haunts her every waking moment. In this first tale, Batwoman battles a madwoman known only as Alice, inspired by Alice in Wonderland, who sees her life as a fairy tale and everyone around her as expendable extras! Batwoman must stop Alice from unleashing a toxic death cloud over all of Gotham City -- but Alice has more up her sleeve than just poison, and Batwoman's life will never ever be the same again. Also, witness the origin of Batwoman in the shocking and tragic story "Go," in which young Kate Kane and her family are kidnapped by terrorists, and Kate's life - and the lives of her family - will never be the same!
