Pick of the Week

by Michel Rabagliati
This sweet and funny coming-of-age story marks a high point of great old-fashioned storytelling in graphic novels. This book tells the story of Paul, a Montreal teenager who, against the backdrop of Quebec in the 1970s, tastes the freedom and responsibilities of adulthood for the first time. Thanks to plummeting grades, Paul defiantly quits high school and takes a job at factory. A year later, tired and depressed, Paul accepts a strange job offer to be a counselor at a summer camp run by a freewheeling Catholic priest. At a camp in the Laurentians, Paul finds himself guiding a motley band of kids--misfits, loners, and troublemakers--through the rough terrain of growing up. (You can see a short preview of the book's contents by going here.)

Website of the Week

Here's a site that's light on fat and heavy on tasty tips for the calorie-conscious. The self-professed food junkie who created the site has been around the buffet table a few times, and through trial and error has learned how to make realistic culinary choices without cramping her lifestyle. She offers up, among other things, a nutritional glossary, hungry girl Q&A, and countless ways to chew the right thing. Underlying all her suggestions is a message of self-education and responsibility. Bon appetit!

Pick of the Week

by Major Brian Dennis
Nubs, an Iraqi dog of war, never had a home or a person of his own. He was the leader of a pack of wild dogs living off the land and barely surviving. But Nubs's life changed when he met Marine Major Brian Dennis. The two formed a fast friendship, made stronger by Dennis's willingness to share his meals, offer a warm place to sleep, and give Nubs the kind of care and attention he had never received before. Nubs became part of Dennis's human "pack" until duty required the Marines to relocate a full 70 miles away--without him. Nubs had no way of knowing that Marines were not allowed to have pets. So began an incredible journey that would take Nubs through a freezing desert, filled with danger to find his friend and would lead Dennis on a mission that would touch the hearts of people all over the world. Nubs and Dennis will remind readers that friendship has the power to cross deserts, continents, and even species.

Website of the Week

Wondermark
One of the Internet's new generation of self-syndicated comic creators, David Malki! (yes, he spells his name with an exclamation point) repurposes illustrations and engravings from 19th-century books into hilarious, collage-style comic strips. The strip has been featured in several papers over the years (most notably in the print edition of The Onion from 2006-2009) but these days is found mostly online. New installments appear twice-weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays, with additional articles or blog posts throughout the week. (The library also has two collections of comic strips from Wondermark, as well, if you prefer to do your reading offline. Click here to see them!)

Pick of the Week

by Derek Fagerstrom, Lauren Smith & the Show Me Team
Show Me How is a revolutionary reimagining of the reference genre, one part how-to guide, one part graphic art showpiece, and one part pure inspiration. In a series of 500 nearly wordless, highly informative step-by-step procedurals, readers learn how to do hundreds of useful (and fascinating and important and sometimes downright bizarre) tasks, including: Perform CPR, dance the tango, pack a suitcase, win a bar bet, play the blues, make authentic sushi rolls, fight a shark . . . and 493 more essentials of modern life. Packed with useful hands-on reference material, Show Me How is a work of art that just happens to also be an indispensable real-life resource.

Website of the Week

The Theoi Project is a site exploring Greek mythology and the gods in classical literature and art. The aim of the project is to provide a comprehensive, free reference guide to the gods (theoi), spirits (daimones), fabulous creatures (theres) and heroes (heroi) of ancient Greek mythology and religion. It profiles each deity and creature of Greek Mythology on a separate page, incorporating an encyclopedia summary, quotations from a wide selection of ancient Greek and Roman texts, and illustrations from ancient art.

Pick of the Week

by Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire
Oversized and lavishly illustrated, this definitive volume of Greek mythology introduces readers to all the major and lesser gods and goddesses as well as the mortal descendants of Zeus. The thrilling tales, along with the vivid artwork, bring the gods and such heroes as Hercules, Theseus, and Jason to life. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--personalities. A family tree, a map of the constellations, and a chart showing both the Greek and Roman names of the major gods are also included.

Website of the Week

Kiddie Records Weekly began in 2005 as a one year project devoted to the golden age of children's records, which produced a wealth of all-time classics. Many of these recordings were extravagant Hollywood productions on major record labels and featured big time celebrities and composers. Over the years, these forgotten treasures slipped off the radar and it became this website's mission to give them a new lease on life by sharing them with today's generation of online listeners. So whether you are hearing these records for the first time or reuniting with a childhood favorite from long ago, you can take pleasure in this trip down memory lane!
