Pick of the Week

by Elissa Stein and Susan Kim
In this hip, hilarious and truly eye-opening cultural history, menstruation is talked about as never before. Flow spans its fascinating, occasionally wacky and sometimes downright scary story: from mikvahs (ritual cleansing baths) to menopause, hysteria to hysterectomies—not to mention the Pill, cramps, the history of underwear, and the movie about puberty they showed you in 5th grade. With color reproductions of (campy) historical ads and early (excruciating) femcare devices, it also provides a fascinating (and mind-boggling) gallery of this complex, personal and uniquely female process. As irreverent as it is informative, this book gives an everyday occurrence its true props -- and eradicates the stigma placed on it for centuries.

Website of the Week

This week's website is all about the cover: The Book Cover Archive is a very cool site that reminds us that all cannot be just digital in the world of books -- that the beauty and the pleasure of the physical object lives on. It is a hand-picked archive collected "for the purpose of appreciation and categorization of excellence in book cover design." You can browse the collection by designer and title, as well as by author, illustrator, genre, publication date, publisher, and even typeface. Users can suggest new additions for the gallery, as well as to comment on the books that are added to the site. See if you can choose your next book by its cover!

Pick of the Week

by Amy Sedaris
Are you lacking direction in how to whip up a swanky soiree for lumberjacks? A dinner party for white-collar workers? A festive gathering for the grieving? Don't despair. Take a cue from comedienne Amy Sedaris and host an unforgettable fete that will have your guests raving. No matter the style or size of the gathering -- from the straightforward to the bizarre -- this book provides jackpot recipes and solid advice laced with Amy's blisteringly funny take on entertaining, plus four-color photos and enlightening sidebars on everything it takes to pull off a party with extraordinary flair. You don't even need to be a host or hostess to benefit -- Amy offers tips for guests, too! (Number one: don't be fifteen minutes early.) Readers will discover unique dishes to serve alcoholics (Broiled Frozen Chicken Wings with Applesauce), the secret to a successful children's party (a half-hour time limit, games included), plus a whole appendix chock-full of arts and crafts ideas (from a mini-pantyhose plant-hanger to a do-it-yourself calf stretcher), and much, much more! (The talking book edition is narrated by the author herself, and is just as hilarious, although admittedly it's a little tougher to follow her recipes.)

Website of the Week

Trying to decide what to cook for dinner tonight? I know that one problem I always seem to have is that whenever I decide to try a recipe from a book, I always seem to be missing some ingredients. If you have this problem too, try Cooking By Numbers! Just indicate by checking the boxes which ingredients you have in your refrigerator and pantry, click Find Recipes, and you have a list of printable recipes that use those ingredients. The recipes are listed in order, with the top one having the highest percent of ingredients you have. If you're feeling lucky (or don't mind having to go to the store for any missing ingredients), just click the I Feel Lucky! box, and the site will offer up a random recipe from the list it has generated for you. (For those of us whose cooking skills could charitably by described as minimal, the site also boasts a Skills by Number section, which teaches you various cooking skills with text and pictures, such as How to Boil an Egg.)

Pick of the Week

Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Huston are at their fierce finest in master Hollywood craftsman Anthony Mann's crackling western melodrama The Furies. In 1870s New Mexico Territory, megalomaniacal widowed ranch owner T. C. Jeffords (Huston, in his final role) butts heads with his daughter, Vance (Stanwyck), a firebrand with serious daddy issues, over her dowry, choice of husband, and, finally, ownership of the land itself. Both sophisticated in its view of frontier settlement and ablaze with searing domestic drama, The Furies is a hidden treasure of American filmmaking, boasting Oscar–nominated cinematography and vivid supporting turns from Judith Anderson, Wendell Corey, and Gilbert Roland.

Website of the Week

Are you bored with your music and want to discover some new bands or singers? Or are you finding it difficult to stay musically current? Try TuneGlue! It's straightforward and easy to use: just type in the name of a musical artist you like, click on the artist's circle when it comes up, and hit expand, and a cluster of similar artists will appear. Each artist that pops up is then linked to another five or six artists to discover. In the case of some artists, you can even find added information such as a small bio or a link to their website. And sure, you can search for the latest pop sensation, but if you want to search for classical composers similar to Claude Debussy, you can do that too. The graphics are simple and sleek and the site is easy to manipulate. Just be careful: you may find it addictive!

Pick of the Week

by J. Milligan
Somewhere off Coney Island, paddling through seaweed and Styrofoam, is secret agent "Jack Fish." As an operative of the Elders of Atlantis, he is to find their enemy and spear him. Once he gets the hang of breathing on the surface, he can take up his mission. Staggering out of the water, he begins his odyssey into the strange city of New York. He's concerned about adjusting, but if he can make it here, he can make it anywhere. At first worried about being noticed, he discovers the Topworld is teeming with neighborhoods that are like reefs, filled with air breathers who seem as alien as he feels. ("You're from Atlanta?"). Jack Fish is just another dude from out of town, hanging out at the Mermaid Diner, scratching the webbing between his toes. Headlong and wildly entertaining, Jack Fish does for Atlanteans what Anonymous Rex did for dinosaurs.

Have you ever looked at Pablo Picasso's more abstract work and thought to yourself, "Hey, I could do that"? Well now you have your chance: Mr. Picassohead is a fun online application that lets you create Picasso-style portraits. Just drag and drop the features onto the canvas, and use the tools at the bottom to make the marks on the canvas shrink or grow, rotate or change color. See if you can make a picture of yourself! When you are done, you can save your work to the website's gallery, and even forward the painting to an email address. You can also browse the gallery to see what kind of pictures other people have come up with. Mr. Picassohead is perfect for people who might consider playing with a potato too frivolous.

Pick of the Week

by Joann Sfar
Living in a house filled with grown-up ghouls and monsters, Little Vampire is so lonely that he's even willing to go to school if that's what it takes to find friends. Unfortunately, school seems to be filled with children who are still alive. . . Little Vampire finds friendship with a boy named Michael, and they embark on adventures in the three stories in this collection. Included in this book are Little Vampire Goes to School (a New York Times Bestseller), Little Vampire Does Kung Fu , and Little Vampire and the Society of Canine Defenders (now published in the United States for the first time). Insightful and inventive, Joann Sfar brings Little Vampire and Michael's fantastical world to young readers in stories that both feed the imagination and resonate with emotional truth. (You can read an excerpt from Little Vampire Goes to School by clicking here.)

Think you know a lot about movies? When you think of your favorite movies, what is it that stands out for you? For artist Paul Rogers, it all comes down to the details; his drawings of films illustrate how those details might signify more for one viewer than they do another. On his blog, Rogers boils down each movie to six isolated images, often details peripheral to the action itself, and invites the reader to identify the movie. The images are delightfully retro line drawings in a style reminiscent of Ben Shahn, images that would not be out of place as magazine illustrations from the 1950s. Are you able to figure out which set of illustrations depicts Pulp Fiction? What about Vertigo? Some Like It Hot? It's harder than you might think!
